Gardening on the edge

Gardening on the edge

Mürren is a traditional Swiss mountain village, elevation 1650 metres, halfway towards Schilthorn, one of the Alps higher summits.  There is no road to the village.  We reached it via a cable car and then a very scenic narrow-gauge railway.  It was mid May, but it did not feel like the middle of Spring here.  It was 8 degrees, drizzling and there were too many clouds to make it worthwhile going further up the mountain.

We walked through Mürren and saw some wonderful traditional Swiss timber homes.  And then I saw this vegie garden and I had to take a photo.

Not many farmers grow crops in this part of Switzerland.  Cows with bells and the occasional sheep is all you see.  The season is too short and the soil is too rocky and infertile.  However, one brave local was determined to have a vegie garden.  'Good on ye, mate' I thought.  Here it is:

My reason for taking the photo was not the great big mountain behind it or the snow in the background.  I took the photo because, if you ever lost your balance in this garden, you would roll down a very steep cliff and never be seen again.

Next time you are not so happy with Tasmania's climate or with where your vegie patch is, remember this garden.
