Complete Organic Fertiliser - Suppliers

Complete Organic Fertiliser (COF) is the name given by Steve Solomon (former seed farmer and publisher of food gardening books) to a mix of organic ingredients that he tailor-made to improve Tasmanian soils. This blog post documents some of the Tasmanian businesses that sell ready-made COF.

This blog post is an addition to other posts on the Food Garden Group blog regarding COF.  If you would like to know what COF is, and why its use is recommended, please have a look here:

I buy COF ingredients, and make it myself. Making it is easy enough, once you have all the ingredients. However, getting the ingredients takes time, and some ingredients come in big bags.

In the Food Garden Group newsletter of January 2019 I asked readers to contact me if they knew where Tasmanians can buy ready-to-use COF.

Simone, Felicity and Daniel responded and provided the info that allowed me to put together the list below. Thank you, people, well done!  Steve Solomon provided info about one of the products mentioned below.  Thank you, Steve!

Tasmanian COF suppliers  (this list was correct in February 2019)

Glenorchy - Stoneman's Nursery in Glenorchy sells COF made by Longley Organic Farm.

Price is $17.95 per 3-litre bag (2019 prices) (see photo below).

Launceston - TP Jones and Co at 321 Hobart Road, Youngtown sells Solomon's Gold (for description see under Margate).

Longley - Longley Organic Farm sells these same bags in their 'honesty shop' at 1690 Huon Road, Longley for $13 per bag (2019 prices).

Margate - Meredith's Orchards has an extensive fruit and vegetable stall at 1830 Channel Hwy, Margate. Per August 2025 they sell two types of COF: one for vegetable beds, and one for fruit trees. Product name is Solomon's Gold. These products are made according to Steve Solomon's recipes, but he has no financial interest in them. At Meredith's Orchards they cost $22.50 for a 6kg. bag (2019 prices).

If you would know Tasmanian suppliers that sell ready-to-use COF, please send an email to foodgardengroup@gmail.com and they will be added to this list.

Happy food gardening,

Max
